Guatemala adoption faqGuatemala Adoption FAQ

What are the children from Guatemala like?

There are babies as young as just days old available from Guatemala. Older children are also available. These babies are born to very poor mothers who cannot take care of their babies. The babies are abandoned to orphanages or are given to lawyers that work in the field of international adoption. When a birth mother asks a Guatemalan lawyer to find a home for her baby, the baby is placed in foster care with a qualified family and will remain with this family until the adoption is finalized. The children are very beautiful, well take care of, and are loved and cuddled by their foster families until the adoptive parents come to bring them home. They a have light to medium brown skin, brown eyes and brown or black hair. All children are tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and venereal diseases. Pictures and medical reports are available.

How long will the process take?

Alot of this depends on you. Many families can get their home study and dossier completed in 2 to 3 months. If you are just beginning the process, the first thing to do is to file you I-600A(USCIS paperwork) and make an appointment with a home study agency to begin your home study assessment. Once your paperwork is turned in to the foreign government, you can expect to have the finalization in around 6 to 8 months. After the finalization, you can travel to bring your child home or ask for an escort to bring your child to you. A realistic time line from the very beginning to the end of the process is apporximately 9 to 12 months.

How do I find the child I would like to adopt?

When a dossier is complete, a family is then ready to accept a referral. The lawyer handling your case will send pictures and medical reports of available children and you can choose from among the available children. When given a referral of a child for consideration, adoptive parents have 14 days in which to decide to accept the referral or decline the referral. For more detailed information regarding the withdrawal of a referral, please go to the following link - http://www.wiaa.org/referralprocedure.asp.

Can I adopt more than one child at once?

Yes, this is very possible. There are seldom siblings, but you can adopt 2 babies at the same time who are not related.

Do I need to travel to pick up my child?

The option is yours. At the finalization of the adoption process parents can travel to Guatemala to pick up the child or they can ask for an esort to bring the child to the U.S.

Do I qualify to adopt from Gualtemala?

Guatemala will work with both childless parents and couples with children living at home. Single women are also welcome to apply.
