What are the children like from Bulgaria?

There are children available as young as 12 months but the greatest number of children waiting for families are older or with special needs. All of these children need a family to call their own. The children are often of Roma descent and have olive skin and dark brown eyes and hair. The children live in orphanages, but many of the orphanages are small and have less than 75 children at a time to care for. The caretakers are usually kind and many try to give the children the love they so desperately need. All children are screened for HIV, Hepatitis B, and venereal disease. Medical reports are provided for all children and sometimes videos are provided if the child has special needs.

How long will the process take?

Part of the initial process depends on the family. Many families complete their home study and dossier in 2 to 3 months and sometimes even faster in some cases. If you are just beginning the process, we recommend first choosing an agency. After you have chosen an agency, have the agency schedule the home study visits. When the home study is completed you can submit your USCIS paperwork (I-800A) and begin gathering the paperwork required for the foreign dossier. When your dossier is complete it is submitted to Bulgaria. The adoption procedure then follows the process and is complete in about 21 to 30 months.

Can I adopt more than one child at once?

Yes, this is possible. Sometimes siblings are available and it is also possible to adopt two non-related children at the same time.

Do I need to travel again to pick up my child?

Yes, you must travel to Bulgaria two times. The first trip is at the beginning of the process, and the second trip is to complete the adoption and bring your child home with you. May adoptive parents enjoy the cultural experience of traveling to the country and soak in the time they spend there. Others, for various reasons, prefer to have the child escorted home.

Do I qualify to adopt a child from Bulgaria?

Bulgaria will allow both married couples and single women to adopt from their country. However, preference in referring healthy young children will be given to two parent families who have 2 or less children living in their home.
