Haiti is a beautiful island country located in the Caribbean.  It is located due east of Cuba.  It shares the island of Hispanola with the Dominican Republic.   It is considered the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.   Over 70% of the adult population is unemployed.  Due to much political unrest and dire economic circumstances, there are many beautiful children being given up for adoption.  The children are of African descent.  guatemala child waiting for adoptionMost of the children have dark skin, black hair and beautiful dark eyes.  They are truly a beautiful race!  Most available children are under age 3, but there are also many older children available as well.  There are many sibling groups of 2 or 3 children available.   The children reside in family-run orphanages, where they are well cared for.  The child to caretaker ratio is generally about 6:1.   The Haitian government has regulations adoptive families must meet, although often times there is flexibility in the law. Haiti will allow single women between the ages of 35 and 50 to adopt children, although in some circumstances a single woman who is at least 30 years old may be accepted in this program. Married couples are also encouraged to adopt children from Haiti, but must be between the ages of 30 and 50, must have been married for at least 5 years, and can have no more than 4 children living in the home at the time they apply for this program. Families that do not meet these guidelines may also be considered, but must have WIA apply for pre-approval on their behalf before they can be accepted in to this program. Parents can adopt more than one child at a time.  The process is relatively quick and the fees are quite reasonable.

Once prospective parents have submitted their dossier and accepted a referral it takes anywhere from 14 to 16 months to complete the adoption.  One parent must travel to Haiti during the adoption process to file the I-600 with USCIS.  When the adoption is completed, parents can then either ask for their child to be escorted home or travel to Haiti to pick up their child.
