Special Needs Adoption InformationSpecial Needs Adoption

Wasatch International Adoptions works with several countries who have children with special needs available for adoption. These children have varying degrees of physical problems which might include such things as blindness, deafness, missing limbs, cleft palate, FAS, correctable heart defects, Hepatitis B, etc. Sometimes the foreign country will consider the placement of an older, healthy child to be a special needs placement. WIA is approved by the China Center of Adoptions Affairs to place special needs children and we receive a new list of available children at least 4 times each year. The fees for special needs adoptions are sometimes discounted by the foreign country, but often times the fees are the same as a "regular" adoption. However, many times adoption grants are available which helps to offset the costs associated with these adoptions. The process of adopting a special needs child can sometimes be expedited, but many countries will not expedite at all. And, families adopting a special needs child must still apply to USCIS, will still need to provide a dossier to the foreign country, and will still have to travel to the foreign country to pick up their adopted child. Adopting a special needs child is a wonderful option for families who can do this, and we encourage anyone interested in this program to contact Kathy Junk at kathy@wiaa.org for more information about this program.

Overview of Special Needs Costs

Please contact the agency for details regarding costs.

Other Costs

Associated with adoption are the home study or the home study review fee, USCIS filing fees, authentication of documents needed by the foreign country, the costs of acquiring these documents, and travel to and accommodations in the foreign country.

WIA currently has several special needs children available from several different countries. For information about special needs adoption, please e-mail Kathy Junk at Kathy@wiaa.org, or call our office at 801-334-8683 Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
